New Mothers invited to Memorial’s Breastfeeding Week event

MODESTO – July 17, 2009 – Memorial Medical Center invites women who have become mothers
within the past year to attend “You Mean the World to Me,” a free community event celebrating
World Breastfeeding Week on August 7 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Memorial’s Health Education and Conference Center in McHenry Village, 1700 McHenry Ave., Modesto. The celebration will include refreshments, gifts and prizes. Seating is limited; to attend, please RSVP by July 27 to 572-7262.

Bonding and the joys of attachment, maternal confidence and self-esteem that breastfeeding provide
are immeasurable. Breast milk has been scientifically proven to provide protection from diarrhea, upper respiratory infections, ear infections, SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome), allergies, asthma, and obesity. Mothers benefit by reducing their risk of breast and ovarian cancers, osteoporosis, and more quickly returning to their pre-pregnancy weights.

Memorial’s Breastfeeding Assistance Program is a service of The Health Center and provides consultation in the hospital following delivery and private consultation after discharge. New mothers are invited to drop in with their babies for the Mommy and Me Support Group, a free weekly community group that encourages participants to share their feelings and support each other’s commitment to breastfeeding.

Memorial is part of Sutter Health, a family of not-for-profit hospitals, physician organizations and other medical services that share resources and expertise to advance health care quality and access. Serving more than 100 communities in Northern California, Sutter Health is a regional leader in cardiac care, cancer treatment, orthopedics, obstetrics, and newborn intensive care, and is a pioneer in advanced patient safety technology.
