Complementary Therapy

Complementary therapies, when used in conjunction with traditional medical cancer treatments, can help manage symptoms, enable and optimize healing and improve the patient's quality of life. Our therapies are administered by a staff of trained and certified professionals to patients receiving treatment from Memorial's Oncology and Radiation Therapy Departments. Appointments may be scheduled through referrals from hospital staff or upon patient request.

Touch Therapy

Touch is the basic human need that validates life and gives hope to both the receiver and the giver. Because patients are in the process of medical treatment and may be overly sensitive to touch, therapists administering this complementary specialty are trained in the art of oncology massage for cancer patients. Touch therapy may be provided in the form of hand and foot massage, and gentle massage to the back, neck and extremities, as appropriate. Among its many benefits, touch therapy can be effective in reducing muscle tension, improving relaxation, managing stress, improving circulation and creating more efficient patterns of breathing.

Music Therapy

Music is a form of sensory stimulation that provokes responses due to the familiarity, predictability and feelings of security associated with it. Research shows that music therapy can be used in the health care setting to effect positive changes in the psychological, physical, cognitive or social functioning of individuals with health problems.

People may benefit from a variety of music therapy interventions that may include listening, singing, playing an instrument, improvisation, imagery/relaxation, song writing or drawing to music, music/lyric discussion and movement to music. Music therapy can promote wellness, manage stress, alleviate pain, express feelings, enhance memory, improve communication and promote physical rehabilitation.
