Nutrition Services

At Memorial Medical Center we have a team of registered dietitians to give you the best medical nutrition therapy. Our goal is to enhance the patient’s quality of life, minimize side effects of treatment, improve patient’s tolerance during treatment and counsel/educate patients and family members while in our care. Cancer treatments can put you at risk for malnutrition and/or weight loss. This can lead to poor health so it is important for you to maintain your weight during cancer treatment.

Nutrition Tips for Cancer Patients

  • Food is just as important as medications, be sure to schedule meal times. This means sitting down to enjoy your meals.
  • Eat some foods high in calories and protein to maintain your weight and your health during treatments. Dairy: 4% milk, half and half, cream cheese, ice cream. Use non-fat dry milk powder in mashed potatoes and creamy soups. This will add protein to your meals.
  • Keep bowel movements regular.
  • Follow these tips for staying regular: Eat fruits and vegetables; these can be eaten cooked or fresh. Avoid soluble fiber if your constipation is due to pain medication as this can increase your constipation. Drink prune juice every day, it doesn’t take much but this little prevention can go a long way.
  • Before taking any vitamins or herbs, check with your physician and registered dietitian as this may affect your treatment and your health.
  • Get involved and ask questions.
