The Cancer Registry monitors all types of cancer diagnosed and treated at Memorial Medical Center, compiles institution-wide cancer statistics and performs follow-up on patients. Data is kept confidential and combined with nationwide statistics to assist health care professionals in effectively diagnosing and treating the disease.
Registry staff also coordinates weekly cancer conferences attended by specialty physicians and other health professionals involved in the care of cancer patients. The conferences focus on the diagnoses, test results and treatment options of patient cases, while educating staff.

Partners In Cancer Care

According to the National Institutes of Health, cancer is the second leading cause of death among Americans. Doctors, researchers, and public health officials are working endlessly to change this fact by improving cancer prevention and treatment, but ultimately hoping to find a cure for cancer. The starting point for the work is the Cancer Registrar.
The Cancer Registrar’s work goes far beyond simply collecting cancer data. In order to accomplish the goal of preventing and controlling cancer, Cancer Registrars also work closely with physicians, administrators, researchers, and health care planners to provide support for cancer program development, ensure compliance of reporting standards, and serve as a valuable resource for cancer information. Cancer Registrars bridge the information gap by capturing a complete summary of a patient’s disease from diagnosis to death.
Cancer Registrars work closely with the health care team to meet the needs of patients through data collection and analysis for evaluating the success of specific treatments and identifying, planning and implementing cancer prevention and control activities.
Registrars must be thoroughly trained and retrained on the latest reporting procedures to ensure that their work is fully compliant with state and national laws. Confidentiality of patient identifying information and related medical data is strictly maintained. Aggregate data are analyzed and published without patient identifiers. The data, in aggregate form, is reported to the American Cancer Society, the State of California, the National Cancer Data Base and the National Cancer Institute.
