    Bariatric Program

The Bariatric Program offers comprehensive education and support to patients who are scheduled for gastric bypass surgery at Memorial Medical Center. According to the American Society for Bariatric Surgery, long-term success depends not just on the surgical procedure, but also on access to services that support you in making permanent lifestyle changes. That’s why this program includes expert nutrition counseling, exercise guidelines, and on-going follow-up.

    Center of Excellence Logo

Memorial Medical Center has been designated as a Bariatric Center of Excellence by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).

The ASMBS examines all aspects of a program's surgical processes before awarding a Center of Excellence designation based on top quality care and effective outcomes. Bariatric Surgery Centers of Excellence are required to comply with rigorous standards established by the Surgical Review Corporation and share information with other designated hospitals on clinical pathways, protocols and outcomes data.

    Program Components

    • The most effective gastric bypass surgery available is known as the Roux-en-Y. This is being performed by surgeons, Dr. Patrick Coates and Dr. Antonio Coirin.
    • Laproscopic surgical equipment is available, depending on patient needs.
    • Individualized care coordination throughout the program by a Bariatric Nurse Educator.
    • Regularly scheduled education classes with nutrition counseling, behavior modification and exercise education before and after surgery. Spouses and family members are encouraged to attend. Post-op educational/support classes are held twice weekly. Patients are encouraged to attend their first class approximately two weeks after surgery. Then they are invited and encouraged to attend as many classes and as frequently as they choose. This is a wonderful way to stay focused and on track with their new lifestyle. To attend a class, phone The Health Center at: 209-572-7262.
    • Monthly support group provides topics specific to the needs of the bariatric patient. The group is open to patients, their family or friends, and anyone considering surgery.
    • A specifically equipped bartiatric unit with experienced and dedicated staff.
    • Mandatory attendance at informational seminar.

    Program Referral and Costs

Many insurance providers cover weight reduction surgery, although, each company has different criteria. Each case is submitted and approval is determined on a case-by-case basis. Submission of your case by your surgeon does not guarantee authorization, but they will do whatever is within their power to assist you in this process. Once your health history questionnaire is received, a referral is generated to our program from your surgeon’s office. You are then scheduled for the next education class. There is currently no program fee for this service.
