Memorial's Cancer Center 2015 Annual Report – Services:
Inpatient and Outpatient
Sutter Health Memorial Medical Center offers a full range of inpatient cancer services through our oncology unit and radiation oncology.
In April, our inpatient oncology unit implemented the General Inpatient Program (GIP) in partnership with Community Hospice in order to provide end of life care to patients and their families. Private inpatient rooms have been renovated to create a home-like setting that will allow family members to comfortably visit or remain with their loved one.
In Harmony Music Therapy Services has been providing music therapy to the adult oncology unit of Memorial Medical Center, since 2005. Services are provided at the bedside to patients and their families. The goals of the music therapy program are to provide music interventions, which increase the quality of life of patients on the unit. Some goals addressed are positive changes in mood/affect, pain/nausea control, emotional expression/support, diversion, a decrease in stress/anxiety, increased patient/family interaction, and relaxation. Every year data is collected to determine the efficacy of the music therapy on patient’s symptom management. Music therapy treatment exhibited efficiency in addressing identified patient/family needs, as well as evidence of decrease in pain, anxiety, and nausea per patient-reported scores, pre and post music therapy intervention. In 2014, outcomes across multiple domain goal areas targeted with clinical treatments demonstrated that music therapy continues to be beneficial to the patient and family experience. Music therapy is currently conducting an efficacy study on the impact of music therapy on pain management in the cancer patient population.
